Clayton Penrose-Whitmore is a legend in the making & a pure performing arts prodigy.
Clayton Penrose-Whitmore is an accomplished African-American classical violinist and Sphinx Competition laureate known for performing with major orchestras, including the Sphinx Virtuosi and New World Symphony. He is recognized for his work promoting compositions by artists of color and his background as a young prodigy who started at age four.
Accomplishments: He won first place in the 2008 Sphinx Competition (Junior Division) and was a 2014 Senior Division Laureate. He has appeared on NPR's From The Top and performed with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
Education: He holds a Bachelor of Music from the New England Conservatory and a Master’s degree from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater and Dance.
Background: Raised in Springfield, Illinois, he was adopted by a white couple. He began studying violin at age four and later moved to Chicago to pursue a professional career.
Musical Style & Focus: He is dedicated to playing works by composers of color, such as Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint Georges.
Recent Activity: In 2025, he was noted for touring with artist Shaboozey and performing at the GRAMMYs.
